Tata Sky turns around, posts Rs 80 cr net profit in FY16

MUMBAI: Tata Sky has turned around in the fiscal ended 31 March 2016, posting a net profit of Rs 80.08 crore on a higher revenue base.

The direct-to-home (DTH) company, which is a joint venture between Tata Sons and Rupert Murdoch-controlled 21st Century Fox, had reported a net loss of Rs 267.27 crore a year ago. Tata Sky does not officially announce its financial performance as it is not a listed company.

While Dish TV was the first DTH company in India to turn profitable, Videocon d2h is on course to be net positive for the full period this fiscal. In the first three quarters of FY17, Videocon d2h, which is awaiting regulatory approval to merge with Dish TV, posted net profit.

Tata Sky’s total revenue climbed 20% to Rs 4,490.96 crore in FY16 compared to Rs 3,739.04 crore a year ago. Total revenue from operations grew to Rs 4,471.83 crore from Rs 3,723.04 crore.
The DTH company’s profit before depreciation, finance costs, tax and prior period items jumped 19.4% to Rs 1,106.35 crore compared to Rs 926.74 crore a year ago.

Total expenses stood at Rs 3,384.61 crore, up 20% from Rs 2,812.30 crore in the prior year.

Starting 1 April 2015, Tata Sky has changed the method of accounting in respect of certain discounts given to distributors and dealers. These discounts, which were earlier charged upfront to the statement of profit and loss, are now accounted at the time of rendering of services to customers. This resulted in a uniformity of accounting of various discounts.

Due to the change, profit for the year ended 31 March 2016 is higher by Rs 121.03 crore.

Tata Sky’s net deficit in the statement of profit and loss stood at Rs 3,649.74 crore as of 31 March 2016. Accumulated loss was at Rs 3,729.82 crore as of 31 March 2015.

In line with market trends, Tata Sky revised its subscription price twice during the financial year under review. Average revenue per user (ARPU) expanded due to increased HD paying subscriber base and continued upselling of new products to existing subscribers.

Five new interactive services—Actve Smart Manager, Actve Fitness, Tata Sky Dance Studio, Actve Devotion and Tata Sky Comedy—were launched during the year, which helped drive the revenue. Tata Sky continued to migrate the MPEG-2 boxes into MPEG-4 in its attempt to offer more channels to its subscribers. All MPEG-2 boxes have already been converted as of 31 March 2016. In FY15, Tata Sky had converted nearly 1.3 million MPEG-2 boxes into MPEG-4 so as to release additional capacity and offer more channels to its subscribers.

The company closed FY16 with a total offering of more than 500 channels, including 81 HD channels.

Continuing its focus in innovation, Tata Sky was the first to introduce the Transfer PVR Box. Push VOD was launched during the year under review which allowed subscribers to watch the content (already pushed and stored in the PVR box at the subscriber premises) without the need for Wi-Fi.

Meanwhile, the company renewed the appointment of Harit Nagpal as its managing director and CEO for five years with effect from 1 January 2016.

Tata Sky Ltd was incorporated in India on 9 January 2001 to provide DTH broadcasting services to TV viewers across the country. The company commenced its operations on 1 August 2006.

Tata Sky provides maximum number of Telugu channels across DTH industry

Tata Sky, India's leading content distribution platform providing Pay TV and OTT services, has launched its latest campaign ‘Annintikante Yekkuva Telugu Channels’ with superstar Amitabh Bachchan. The campaign announced Tata Sky’s offering #MaxJingalala of 600 channels and services, which is the highest ever in the DTH sector. Tata Sky today is a market leader in Telugu and HD channels.

With a strong distribution network, there is a great recall value for the brand in towns and villages across the state. The districts of Mahboobnagar and Nizamabad have shown wide acceptance towards the brand. While Hyderabad as a market has been slowly growing for the brand, the current focus would be to reach the rest of the state through this campaign.

Along with the maximum number of Telugu channels, Tata Sky has the maximum number of Marathi, Malayalam, Assamese, Punjabi, Tamil, Odia, Kannada and Bengali channels on offer across the DTH sector in India. Tata Sky is offering an unprecedented 75 HD (highest in the industry) and 483 SD channels. The bouquet of 31 value added services, 15 SD and HD movie platforms specials, nine exclusive +1 channel feeds, have been a clear differentiator and a key focus area for the brand.

The latest integrated campaign will involve a contest that gives the viewers an opportunity to a meet and greet with superstar Amitabh Bachchan. The first phase of the campaign kicked off in the second last week of December with Big B playing a game of ‘Hide and Seek’ with the audience. The second phase will be on air from December 28, with a Q and A contest where the viewers need to send their messages to 56633.

Malay Dikshit, Chief Communications Officer, Tata Sky, said, “Consumers in India consider the number of channels provided by an entertainment platform to be amongst the second biggest reason to make their purchase decisions. Tata Sky is leaving no stone unturned to offer the maximum number of channels and services to its subscribers.

Hence offering Annintikante Yekkuva Telugu Channels catering to every member of the family is key to the Tata Sky offering.” Apart from TV, the integrated campaign will run for a period of 4 weeks across print, radio, OOH, bus-backs, utility bills, cinema halls and wall paintings.

Reliance Jio set-top box image leaks; Is DTH service coming soon?

Reliance Jio is reportedly prepping to launch its DTH service in India. While this claim exists since a few months, the first clue about the set-top box from Jio's stable has emerged as the image of the alleged Jio set-top box along with the remote control has leaked online.
The set-top box is of round shape and is glossy black in texture. The design of the Jio DTH appears to be in contrast to the set-top boxes that exist in the market with a regular box shape design. This unusually designed DTH set-top box is said to be connected to the dish or Jio Fiber. Notably, Jio Fiber is an FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) service from Jio that is claimed to render up to 1Gbps broadband speed. From the leaked image, we can infer that the set-top box will feature a number of ports such as an S/PDIF, an HDMI port, an ethernet port, and a USB port. The set-top box also seems to let users directly plug the broadband cable for internet access. Also, the remote control that is supposed to be bundled with the set-top box appears to be a standard controller with interesting features. It appears to have a button for mic option, meaning it will have voice recognition abilities. There also appears to be a button for Jio to suggest that there will be an integration of Jio content services with the set-top box.

Furthermore, it is believed that the set-top box from Jio will be introduced in March or April, which is the same time frame when the Jio Fiber broadband service is likely to be rolled out. As of now, Jio Fiber is on trials in some parts of Mumbai and renders speeds between 70 Mbps and 100 Mbps. Moreover, the Jio Fiber will be free for the first three months, but users need to pay Rs. 4,500 for the initial installation as well as the router.

Reliance Jio DTH service launch is imminent: Leak shows odd-shaped set-top-box and Jio RC

Leaked photos of Reliance Jio DTH set top box and remote control gives a new spin to the ongoing rumours about Jio's new territory.
Reliance Jio is going places. After Reliance Jio telecom service, the company is reportedly working on broadband and DTH services too.

While news of Jio's GigaFiber 1Gbps broadband has gained some level of legitimacy even before the company's official announcement, there hasn't been anything concrete about Jio's DTH service so far. Reports have been inconsistent about the existence of Jio DTH service, but the latest leak makes it almost official.

Gizmo Times shared an image of a strange set-top-box and a remote control for Jio DTH, hinting at an official launch very soon. According to the report, Reliance Jio might make an official statement on its Direct to Home (DTH) service sometime in March or April.

By the looks of it, the circular set-top-box will connect to Jio GigaFiber or a dish to bring all the entertainment content and channels to your TV. The Jio STB includes an S/PDIF port, an Ethernet port, an HDMI and a USB port, much like a standard STB.

The remote control shown in the image is clearly of a Jio set-top-box. Jio logo on the RC, which appears to be a finished product, indicates that the service is in its final stages of testing.

The timing of Jio DTH and Jio GigaFiber launch seems to align and it would make sense for the company to launch both services at once. If the company goes through with the plans, Jio users will be able to get bundled services for their mobile, TV and internet from one operator.

Currently, Airtel is the only provider in all three fields and Jio's competition with the India's largest carrier hasn't been a secret. Sooner or later, we are sure to see Jio stand side by side with Airtel by offering competing services to consumers at a disruptive price.

If an earlier report is to be believed, Jio's DTH service could offer as many as 350 channels in its basic package priced at just Rs. 185 per month, which is merely half of what the customers are paying to get the service on Airtel Digital or Tata Sky.

Are you excited about Jio DTH service? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

DTH at a Glance: C'mon, week four

Danny Nett Published 4 hours ago

Good morning! While most of campus is in the death throes that are week four of spring semester, a few thousand lucky high schoolers are receiving their early acceptance letters. To celebrate this time, we asked seniors to share their memories of getting into UNC.

For me, it might've been four years already, but it feels like a month ago. I was literally standing in the bathroom at my family's old house when my trusty, old blocky white iPhone 4 received a text from a friend saying decisions had been posted. I logged in, saw that I'd been accepted and involuntarily screamed like a 4-year-old girl so loudly my parents called down from upstairs to ask what happened.

And that, 3,000 dearest friends, is the story of how I was accepted into UNC mid-using the bathroom.

QUICK HITS

Amid a possible confirmation of Betsy DeVos as secretary of education, many are worried about her stance on Title IX and how she would potentially affect sexual assault policy in the UNC system.
An expansion of employee parking is underway in Chapel Hill to make life a little easier for employees who work the late shifts at Franklin Street's bars and restaurants.
Because they're not satisfied with the cardiovascular damage they've already caused me, UNC men's basketball eked out an 80-78 win over the Pittsburgh Panthers last night.
If you're still having withdraws for gender-homogenous singing groups after the breakups of One Direction and Fifth Harmony, fear not. UNC's Achordants are preparing to drop their first EP in the fall.

IN DAILY CRIME

Someone was cited for shoplifting $535.19 worth of groceries from a Chapel Hill Food Lion. Another person was reported for cutting the telephone line of a property on Colony Woods Drive.

IN CAMPUS DRAMA

Student Congress revealed more details about the possible breakup between undergraduate and graduate student governments. A proposed bill would split them into two branches, each with a president, a cabinet and a senate.

DTH at a Glance: The Ancestors

Danny Nett Published 21 hours ago

Good morning, and welcome to the final day of National Hot Tea Month! Also, congratulations on finding your way to the right place for scalding hot T.

Because I'm not above shameless self-promotion, I'd like to invite y'all to check out the adventure I took into University archives yesterday — in which I call for the return of a campus event from the 1980s that, from what I've gathered, basically strong-armed hundreds of UNC students into wearing khakis because wearing blue jeans was gay.

And to think I used to say learning history was boring. Sigh.

P.S. I apologize in advance to the individuals whom I referred to as "The Ancestors" when they are definitely only about 55 years old.

— Danny

QUICK HITS

Take a look at our first piece in a series looking at homelessness in Orange County, told through the stories of the individuals most familiar with it.
A recent study found that compared to other elite colleges, UNC apparently has a fairly balanced income distribution across its student body.
UNC students took the opportunity to share videos and a group photo with their representatives to voice concerns over President Trump's "Muslim ban."

IN DAILY CRIME

Someone stole "a youth-size basketball goal," valued at $62.84, from the front of a residence on Michaux Road. Another person swiped a reflector and a number off of someone's mailbox.

IN STATE POLITICS

After nearly a year of contention, the possibility of a compromise or repeal of House Bill 2 seems to be dwindling.

IN CONSTRUCTION

The building housing CVS on Franklin Street has completed its facelift. The renovation aimed to modernize the building, bring it up to current energy standards and change its aesthetic from ~drab~ to ~three-story Apple Store~

IN OPINIONS I DISAGREE WITH

Our editorial board more or less wrote a 400-word subtweet about me today by taking on the topic of ghosting. The gist is that you should be polite and grow up and be responsible. Thus, I respectfully decline.
