4K DTH streaming in India will make its mark in 2016 via Samsung’s Tizen OS

It may be too early to talk about future of 4K television in India, but surely one can expect 2016 to be lot better for the display technology than what we've seen till date. Samsung is known for its 4K (and SUHD) prowess; and with Airtel, they're looking to make television viewing better than ever before.

Now, Airtel will ensure that the content gets pushed out at a much faster pace than what is available right now. Over the past couple of years, direct streaming is a popular platform for TV culture in household. And in order to make things 4K-clear, major names like Samsung and Airtel are said to be teaming up yet again.

This hardly comes as a surprise but what's interesting to note is the route that Samsung intends to partake so that 4K content is ready to be offered to public. The Korean brand is making use of its Tizen operating system, which we've already seen running on its Smart and 4K TVs, aiding Airtel's cause for proliferating 4K content next year.

The same was confirmed by Airtel at the Tizen Developer Summit earlier this year and Samsung is being entrusted with offering the DTH provider with hardware as well software support. While 4K technology has been around for a while in the country but for the quality to become truly acceptable, the need for content is more than apparent.

Apparently, Samsung will be making revisions to its Tizen OS for television that will be decoded to support 4K content at all levels. In addition to offering content, Tizen will offer Airtel the chance to provide its own set of applications via app store on the Samsung 4K TV series.
Airtel will be introducing its UHD variant of set-top boxes later year. This way, 2016 can become the foundation for 4K-revolution in India and we're excited.

Making the most of cashbacks

A mobile phone that costs Rs 50,000 is available on an e-commerce website for Rs 42,000. Another website is offering Rs 10,000 cashback on it.

So, it effectively costs Rs 40,000, provided you pay through a particular mobile wallet. Which is the better option?

Paying through the mobile wallet can save you Rs 2,000 more than the first e-commerce website. But, the money remains in your wallet for you to spend in future. Whereas in case of the first e-commerce website, it is a direct of saving of Rs 8,000 upfront. If the mobile wallet is an open wallet, you can use it to pay utility bills, cab services or at any store or website that will accept it. But, if it is a closed wallet, you will be able to use it only on those e-commerce websites, stores, brands, etc, which have a tie-up with the wallet.

Mumbai-based Sangeeta Irani, who has her own public relations company, regularly shops on Paytm and avails of cashback discounts of 10-40 per cent. The money saved goes into her Paytm mobile wallet account, which she then uses to pay for cab rides, recharge her DTH, etc.

The only problems she has faced so far were more to do with the quality and packaging of the goods she has purchased, which might be better on other e-commerce websites, she admits. "I purchased a Corelle dinner set, which costs Rs 12,000, for Rs 7,000. At an offline retailer, I might have got a discount of only Rs 2,000 or so. But, as the packaging was not good, some pieces were broken and I had to return it. The refund took some time,'' she says.

As a precaution, Irani does not keep above Rs 3,000-4,000 in her mobile wallet at any point of time. While purchasing from Paytm, she uses the mobile wallet for smaller amounts; for bigger purchases, she uses her credit card. "Always remember to use the code while shopping or else you will not get the cashback,'' she says.

Entities such as Paytm offer cashbacks to attract buyers and retain them. As compared to those offered on banks' credit or debit cards, the advantage of a cashback through your mobile wallet is that it is immediate. You get the money back into your wallet as soon as the goods are shipped, often in only a couple of days.

"For customers, the advantages are instant gratification and, two, the money can be used the way you want to. For us, it is the advantage that customers come back to our platform,'' says Saurabh Vashistha, vice-president, Paytm.

Paytm recently had a series of cashback offers up to 100 per cent on different categories. The first was on fashion, sports and kids (toys); followed by home and kitchenware and then electronics.

In case of open wallets like Paytm, you can even transfer the money back to your bank account or debit or credit card.

You will not be able to do so with closed wallets.

While cashbacks and discounts are an effective way to reduce the cost of products, users should first read and understand all the offer conditions.

In case you have not done the Know Your Customer (KYC) vetting for your wallet, you can only get a highest of Rs 10,000 as cashback. That is the maximum you can maintain in a non-KYC wallet according to regulation. This means if you are entitled to Rs 13,000 as cashback on a purchase, you will get back only Rs 10,000 if you have not completed the KYC. The remaining Rs 3,000 will be credited to your wallet only the following month, says Vashistha.

Always compare the price of the goods to see if the discounted price after the cashback is actually lower or not, advises Manish Chopra, co-founder, Little, an app-only marketplace for deals in the online-to-offline (O2O) space. Using the app, customers can get discounts in online stores, restaurants, spas, theatres and on services such as laundry.

"If the cashback is being offered after marking up the price, it is not a real discount. So, don't blindly buy only because of a cashback offer. Also, it is better if you get a cashback on your current purchase, rather than a discount for your next one. For, you will then be forced to return to that same merchant or to the same website for your future purchase,'' he says.

Sometimes, the cashback might be only for the first time you purchase from a particular merchant or for using a wallet for the first time. Or it might be only for certain customers. Vashishta says, "Some merchants might offer cashback only for their regular customers. It is possible to structure selective cashback programmes. Or, if a utility company wants to encourage customers to pay bills online, it may offer cashback for those paying online for the first time. The idea is that once people get used to the convenience, they will continue to use it.''

Feature and ease of convenience is what Oxigen, another mobile wallet service, hopes will attract and retain customers in the long run. Rachna Prasad, its marketing head, says, "cashback is a win-win from a customer point-of-view. But, we offer it selectively. We know we cannot continue it for a long time. So, we don't do it on a blanket basis. Currently, we are offering cashback on first-time usage for recharge and for movie tickets with PVR.''.

Virender Gupta, head of PayUmoney Wallet, agrees cashbacks are more of a strategic promotion for merchants and there could be a cap in terms of frequency and amount.

"Users get cashback into their wallet on paying with PayUmoney on certain merchants. This is in the range of two to 20 per cent and for only select partners. For all other merchants who use the PayUmoney check-out, we offer a one per cent discount on the transaction value,'' he says.

Fine print

If the cashback comes back after a long while, say a month or so, of if you have to give proof of purchase such as invoice number, etc, it acts as a deterrent, says Pratap T P , co-founder and CMO, Qwikcilver, an information technology company that offers end-to-end gift and stored-value card solutions for retail customers. "Sometimes, cashback might be for a percentage of total spends but with a cap on the total amount. Or one might need to spend a certain amount. One should watch for such conditions,'' he says.

For instance, Qwickcilver has partnered with about 150 brands across categories like apparel, lifestyle, electronics and travel to offer reward points in its Woohoo app and Woohoo online store. However, these points can be used only to purchase those brands. In such cases, the reward points are useful only if the app or website has tie-ups with a large number of partners.

Using social media to carry out transactions

Banks are allowing customers to transact through Facebook, Whatsapp and Twitter in the age of digital banking by using the power of technology
Last week, a group of friends met for a gettogether. Movie, lunch and desserts and some souvenir shopping were on the agenda. It was a Dutch treat. This time too it was no different except that the money transfer was done electronically, some transferring through Facebook, Whatsapp and Twitter. And no one needed to know the bank accounts of others.

Various banks and other payment services players have their own version of wallets that allow people to send or receive money, pay bills, recharge mobile talk-time and a host of other things through the use of social networking sites.

Kotak Mahindra allows hastag banking using Twitter and can be used to check balance, do mobile & DTH recharge, transaction history, cheque book request. In fact, many more activities are now just a tweet away. All the users have to do is link their twitter handle to their bank accounts and get updates simply by tweeting to @KotakBankLtd . The responses come to them as a DM so only they can view them.

Also, those using the net banking facility of Kotak, can also use “Mail Money Service’. Only the email ID and mobile number of the beneficiary are needed. They can choose to deposit the money in the accounts of their choice. It follows a triple security -through passwords (OTPs) sent to both sender and beneficiary’s mobile numbers and a redemption link sent to beneficiary's email ID. Its Kaypay app allows users to send money to friends from any bank to any bank by using the Facebook id, Google+ id, Email id and mobile number of the recipient. ICICI Bank too has been offering banking services through social networking sites like the Twitter and Facebook.

ICICI has launched Pockets, a digital bank with a mobile first interface. Pockets is a wallet solution. One needs download the app, enter the KYC details, verify the mobile number and create a user ID and password.

The VISA powered wallet allows one to send and receive money, book tickets, gift physical/e-vouchers, pay bills, recharge mobiles and split expenses with friends.

ICICI Bank also offers payments service using Twitter. With this one can pay a friend, recharge prepaid mobile, check account balance and view last three transactions on Twitter. When customers send money to friends using icicibankpay, the senders will receive a 4 digit passcode on their registered mobile number. The communication between Twitter account and ICICI Bank account is carried out through private structured messages and not through public tweets. No financial details are shared on the public domain. The use of social media is only as a communication platform.

HDFC has Chillr, which allows its users to transfer money to anyone in the phonebook contacts. Chillr is a mobile-first multi-bank platform that enables secure and instant digital payments between bank accounts in peer-to-peer, peer-to-merchant & enterprise use cases, according to Sony Joy, co-founder and chief executive officer, Chillr. The fund transfer is between bank accounts. There are no virtual accounts or intermediaries, he says.

According to Joy, multiple credentials are verified to lessen the chances of fraud. Mobile phone plays a key role here in KYC compliance.

“Wearable devices will soon drive the growth in this segment,” he says, adding that it has plans to bring voice-based technology into this realm. There are no charges for HDFC customers. It is in talks with three more banks and is likely to go live in a month. The app is sim and device specific and cannot be opened if these are changed. The credentials have to be reestablished.

Oxigen Services launched wallet services on Facebook and Twitter in August last year. It has been seeing a significant increase in the number of transactions, according to Ankur Saxena, chief executive officer. About 2,00,000 users send money using these social networking channels. “We act as an intermediary and the security aspects are taken care of,” he said. Money can be sent anyone with an Oxigen wallet or not.

The transactions on social networking sites are as safe as any other channel. Here, the social networking channels are used only for communication. The mobile phone number, email id, twitter hands, contacts are used as KYC tools.

The OTP adds another level of security. While no additional security measures are needed, one has to guard his social networking credentials. Transactions based on mobile are safer as mobile is a personal device and passcodes sent cannot be viewed by others.

From the safety point of view, the damage, if any, with the use of social networking platforms or wallets is limited only to the value stored on the wallet. The chances for this too are greatly reduced as the OTP is sent separately, he said.

Another player, Paytm, too has a wallet. It has three tabs- send, request and add. ‘Send’ is used to send money to others using their mobile number or email id. ‘Request’ is used to ask money from others. Again only the mobile number or e-mail id is used. The transactions list is visible and these can be backed up or shared with others to keep a record.

How money transfer app Chillr is scaling up

Peer-to-peer money transfer and recharge app Chillr plans to expand its range of services and tie-up with more banks over the next couple of months to attract users, as it sets its sight on breaking even in two years’ time.

Chillr will soon launch a payment facility for enterprises as an additional revenue stream while aiming to double its base of active users and quadruple the number of transactions by March, founder and CEO Sony Joy told Techcircle.in.

Joy said that the app is recording transactions worth Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crore a day and that the total transaction value since the app was launched in December 2014 has touched Rs 105 crore.

The app, owned by Mumbai-based Backwater Technologies Pvt Ltd, allows users to transfer money to their phone book contacts. It also allows recharge of prepaid mobile phones, DTH TV subscription and data cards. It is directly linked to the customer’s bank account, and so eliminates the need for a prepaid wallet. All transactions are authenticated by a four-digit MPIN issued by the bank.

Joy expects Chillr, which raised $7 million late last year from investors led by Sequoia Capital, to break even during the financial year 2017-18.

More banking partners

Chillr has tie-ups with HDFC Bank, Bank of Baroda and Catholic Syrian Bank to offer its services. It hopes to bring this number to 12 by March and has already received approval from eight banks, Joy said.

While all users can receive money, only users who hold accounts with Chillr’s partner banks can send money and check their account balance within the app.

Joy said Chillr will soon double the average daily transactional limit to Rs 1 lakh and increase the per-transaction cap five times to Rs 50,000. It will also add more utility payment services including postpaid mobile bills, cooking gas cylinder payments, and water and electricity bills. “The setting up of nodal accounts with banks for this purpose is in its last leg,” Joy said.

Number of transactions

Currently, the average number of daily transactions is about 25,000. Chillr is targeting to increase that number to one lakh a day by the end of March 2016.

“The focus is on increasing the number of transactions rather than breaching a certain total transaction value as each category of services within the app has different average transactional limits and value,” said Joy. He added that the average usage of the app per active user has risen to four-five times a month from two-three earlier.

According to Joy, the app has about 8 lakh total users. Of this, active users are in the range of 4-4.5 lakh. By the end of this financial year, Chillr aims to have 10 lakh active users on the platform.

Merchant apps

As a pilot initiative, Chillr is all set to launch payment facilities for merchants by the end of this week in Pune.

To begin with, around 50 merchants will have the app installed and this number will be increased to 150 by the end of January.

The new service would allow the users to use the Chillr app as a mode of payment with these merchants.

A feature called ‘Near me’ will help users identify merchants who accept Chillr as a mode of payment in the vicinity. Merchants, in turn, would offer a discount of 10-25 per cent to Chillr users, said Joy.
