CABSAT 2017: du launches DTH delivery service via Eutelsat 7W

UAE telco du has expanded its capacity on Eutelsat 7W to provide broadcasters with a high definition (HD) direct-to-home (DTH) delivery service.
Du is aiming the DTH platform at free-to-air networks across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), as well as international broadcasters. It will use du’s newly leased DVB-S2 transponder, optimised for the region’s high growth markets, on Eutelsat’s 7W satellite.

“Our customer is at the core of all our operations, and we are wholly committed to innovating and working with various partners to create and deliver solutions that optimize the end-user experience,” said Fahad AlHassawi (pictured), chief commercial officer, du. “Through our New HD DTH Platform, we aim to enhance broadcast services for over 56 million homes across the Middle East and North Africa Region.”

Speaking with Rapid TV News at CABSAT 2017, Ghassan Murat, VP of business development & strategy at Eutelsat Dubai, said: “Eutelsat is dedicated to accompanying the uptake of HD and a diversity of free-to-air channels on our satellites.

DTH at a Glance: Flashback Friday

Danny already used this Shangela quote earlier in the week, but it's more appropriate for me: Halleloo, I'm back!

In case you forgot who I am, I wrote this thing regularly last semester and now I only write it when Danny is off being a young professional in St. Petersburg and I'm just here being young. But don't get too excited; this is only a one-night engagement. Marcus Paige and I have that in common — last night, he came back to North Carolina to play a game with his current team, the Salt Lake City Stars.

While I don't want the entirety of last year to return, I hope that getting Marcus back in the Tar Heel state is a reminder of where we've been for the basketball team as they take on Butler in the Sweet 16. As long as we stop getting those reminders by the Final Four I'm all good.

IN WRESTLING CONTROVERSY

Most people know, at least vaguely, that wrestlers compete in different weight classes. Most don't think about the process behind "making weight," which has claimed the lives of several college athletes over the sport's history. While NCAA regulations and coach attitudes have alleviated the issue, disordered eating and weight loss and gain still haunt athletes.

IN WEEKEND FUN

Plays, culture and nerds, oh my! UNC's weekend attractions include the opening of Company Carolina's "The Producers," the Vietnamese Student Associations keystone event "VietNite," and the continuation of "Geek Week," a collaborative event run by New Student and Carolina Parent Programs.

Somebody tried to steal two basketball jerseys valued at $150 from Johnny T-Shirt on Monday by putting them in their pants and walking out of the store. I'm not even mad because I honestly considered pulling this when I realized how much those jerseys cost. Other fun charges include fraud, alcohol and drug violations and noise complaints.

The rapid rise of Free to Air channels: FICCI-KPMG report

“The emergence of Free to Air channels as a major source of reach and viewership has the potential to translate into a large advertising market,” according to the FICCI - KPMG Media and Entertainment Industry Report 2017 that was launched at FICCI Frames 2017 in Mumbai today. However, the rise of free to air channels (FTA) would be accompanied with risks around cannibalisation of subscription revenues, the report warns.

The rise of FTA genre has seen a commensurate increase in interest from advertisers in the last year as well. “Brands who have a substantial rural consumption base were now able to measure their spend performance, which resulted in sustained inflow of the advertising monies.

The FTA channels garnered an estimated INR 400-500 crore of the overall TV advertising pie in 2016; which is expected to rise to INR 800-1000 crore in 2017, as the channels gain prominence in the upcoming annual budget planning exercise for advertisers.

The same could result in an adverse impact on subscription revenues in the long run with a material number of subscribers in Phase 3 and 4 and new additions to the C&S fold likely to find FreeDish as an attractive option as compared to Pay DTH and MSOs. “The increase in advertising revenue pie could compensate a part of negative impact on subscription revenues,” the report says.

With a projected 30 million subscribers on the FreeDish platform by 2021, KPMG forecasts a net negative impact of INR 9,000-11,000 crore on the total industry revenues over 2016-2021. The FreeDish projections take into account upgradation of FreeDish subscribers to Pay TV each year, and a churn out factor from FreeDish is assumed to account for that. The report cites that it has “also taken into account the inflow of incremental FTA advertising revenues, to arrive at the potential impact of FreeDish”. “

The FTA market has seen a rapid growth in terms of advertising revenues in 2016 resulting in opening up of the rural markets for advertisers. Robust ratings of FTA GECs have seen advertisement rates rising to 1/5th of the Pay GECs, from 1/10th at the start of 2016. However, the threat to subscription revenues is real, and the onus lies with broadcasters collectively to ensure Pay channels remain relevant,” Ashish Sehgal, chief revenue officer, Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) was quoted as saying in the report.

“The content overlap with FreeDish is a serious concern. Concept of windowing and differentiated content needs to be thought through. We are cannibalising long term Pay TV market for easy short term money at the moment. With an estimated 150 million HHs for Pay TV market, each customer lost to FreeDish is a long term revenue loss for DTH and MSOs,” added Rohit Jain, deputy chief executive officer, Videocon D2H. Some of the measures devised by Pay TV platforms to counter the potential impact include aiming for a better share of the market in South India – as the success of FreeDish as a platform has been largely observed in the Hindi Speaking Markets.

Almost all DTH players have launched INR 99 + (Add On) entry level packs to counter the FreeDish value proposition, with the FTA channels a part of this package.

The FreeDish platform could also emerge as an intermediate medium for a subscriber coming into the C&S fold for the first time. Pay TV operators could use this opportunity to upgrade such potential users to a premium content viewing experience.

DTH at a Glance: Can you be your own problematic fave?

India’s largest DTH firm to begin operations from September 2017?

CHENNAI: With approvals proceeding apace and no hitches foreseen in the coming months, the roll-out of India’s new direct-to-home (DTH) behemoth is slated for no later than September. Dish TV Videocon Ltd., the result of a merger between two of the largest DTH players in the Indian market, will create the single largest DTH company in the country.

The company, however, has already announced that it will keep the Videocon d2h and Dish TV brands separate.

Confirming that the new company is expecting to begin operations by September, Dish TV chairman and managing director Jawahar Goel told Express that September was the outside margin for beginning combined operations. “We feel July or August is definitely doable. But we will begin operations by September,” he said. Sources in Videocon d2h also confirmed the expected timeline for launch.
The combined entity will, in one shot, become the largest DTH and media company in the country, boasting a subscriber base of more than 27.62 million (as on September 2016, Dish TV and Videocon d2h had a subscriber base of 15.1 million and 12.52 million respectively). Combined sales in financial year 2015-16 stood at Rs 5,920 crore.

While the merged company will be the largest media company in India, surpassing Zee Entertainment (Rs 5,850 crore) in sales, it will boast an even more impressive market share in the DTH market at 45 per cent, almost double that of its nearest competitor -- Tata Sky (24.2 per cent). It will also have more than a 15 per cent share in the 145-million Pay TV market.

The merged entity has set its eyes on the fast growing local and hyperlocal market, according to Videocon sources. Videocon d2h alone added a bouquet of 42 regional Tamil and Telugu channels in the last one week. “There is immense potential here,” pointed out one official.

According to Goel, who is slated to be the head of the combined venture, both brands will continue as they are, with neither narrowing focus to specific markets (urban or rural) once the new company takes over. “There is no such demarcation in the Indian market. What this will do effectively, is give us twice the reach in distribution and marketing strengths,” he said.

Earlier, during the announcement of the deal, Saurabh Dhoot, executive chairman of Vd2h, had expressed similar sentiments. “We are excited at how in the long term, the combination can unlock significant value for shareholders, and the synergies.” Dish TV promoter Essel Group, which also owns Zee Entertainment, will pick up an extra 5 per cent stake in the new firm.

CCI seeks Trai view on merger of Dish TV and Videocon d2h

CCI asks Trai to weigh in on whether the Dish TV-Videocon d2h merger will violate any anti-trust laws
The entity that will be formed after the Dish TV-Videocon d2h merger will be called as Dish TV Videocon Ltd. Photo: HT
xNew Delhi: The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to weigh in on whether the merger of direct-to-home (DTH) firms Dish TV India Ltd and Videocon d2h Ltd will violate any anti-trust laws, three people familiar with the development said.

The Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd-owned DTH platform Dish TV and the DTH arm of Videocon Industries Ltd had announced their merger in November 2016. The new entity is to be renamed as Dish TV Videocon Ltd.

Dish TV will own 55% and Videocon 45% stake in the new company which will have a 45% share of the market.

A Trai official confirmed that CCI has asked the regulator for its view.

“CCI has reached out to us. We are still evaluating the case and haven’t reached a decision. We will respond to the request in a few days,” added this person who asked not to be identified.

Spokespeople for Dish and Videocon were not available to comment.

India has six private DTH firms—Dish TV, Reliance BIG TV Ltd, Tata Sky Ltd, Videocon d2h Ltd, Sun Direct TV Pvt. Ltd and Bharti Telemedia Ltd. State broadcaster Doordarshan also runs a DTH platform for free-to-air channels called DD Free Dish.

Dish TV is the market leader with a 25% share, followed by Tata Sky with a 23% market share, according to data from Trai. Videocon d2h and Bharti Telemedia have 20% market share each.

Together, Dish TV and Videocon d2h will serve 27.6 million customers (data as of 30 September), “out of a total of 175 million TV households highlighting significant room for growth”, the companies had said in a BSE filing at the time of the merger.

“The proposed transaction is expected to create a leading cable and satellite distribution platform in India. The combined entity would have a revenue of Rs5,915.8 crore for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2016, positioning it as a leading media company in India,” they added.

A CCI official who did not wish to be identified confirmed that the commission is looking into “whether the merger will violate anti-trust laws”. “TRAI has been consulted for an opinion on where the players stand in the market,” the official added.

As per the Competition Commission of India Act, 2002, the regulator can seek opinions of other authorities. CCI is expecting a reply within 60 days.

An expert said consolidation is long overdue in the DTH business. “The dominant position of a company cannot be for long because one consolidation will not be enough for the industry” said Ashesh Jani, partner, Deloitte Haskins and Sells. Even if a merger creates a market leader, he explained, it will only be till the next merger.

According to a 2013 report on the Indian DTH market by Hong Kong-based research firm Media Partners Asia, revenues in the DTH industry are expected to touch $3.9 billion by 2017 and $5.3 billion by 2020, up from $1.5 billion in 2012.

Even 12,000 new channels won’t save the DTH market

There should be no major surprise when a satellite research firm puts out a report claiming there will be more than 12,000 new linear channels in the next 10 years, but we do feel obliged to pick at its methodology and remind our readers that this is just another cover up for a market that is being devastated by OTT video.

The 9th Edition of Northern Sky Research’s (NSR) Linear TV via Satellite report projects that 12,200 new channels will launch by 2026 to reach a total of over 53,600 channels being delivered over satellite by that time. All this during a time when more and more content will be consumed on demand. The report has somehow reached this figure…
